A basic education in clay is essential when first purchasing modeling clay. The characteristics of oil based modeling clays are very subjective, therefore, we strongly suggest that a prepackaged sample kit be purchased for a minimal shipping and handling fee. The sample kits include full color brochures for both Industrial Design and Fine Arts, a price list and ¼ pound samples (about the size of a stick of butter) of 17 different clays. Samples provide a "hands-on" physical examination to compliment written descriptions. Take the time to review each of the brochures and price list information prior to tearing open the actual samples. After studying the written information you will likely be able to narrow the prospective choices down to 2 or 3 clays. Also, take care when removing the samples packaging so that you know what product label goes with which individual sample.
The most common question asked by new clients, when determining what clay to purchase, relates to the sulphur content of clay. Some clays are sulphur based others are sulphur free. Sulphur is a non-toxic, inexpensive filler used in the production of some of Chavant's clays. It offers a great "feel" to the clay but has a noticeable odor, may sting with direct eye contact, will tarnish some jewelry and can complicate the moldmaking process.
Eliminating sulphur in some of our formulations minimizes the risk of a damaged mold. Whether or not a clay contains sulphur, as a matter of precaution, it is suggested (not necessarily required) that a sealer such as shellac or an acrylic and a release agent be applied to the model prior to moldmaking. Hundreds of moldmaking systems exist. Test systems before proceeding on a finished model.
